Do What You Love

Have you discovered your purpose? Are you employed, doing what you really love? If so, you are among the very fortunate! A recent Gallop poll revealed that only 30% of workers surveyed are regularly engaged or inspired by their jobs. People want to be inspired. They want to work toward a higher purpose and feel good about themselves.

We all know someone that follows their passion and is daily driven towards success. Here is a short list of those I know personally as well as some names you will recognize.

  • My friend Bob -- Had a good profession in HR and decided to study law. He passed bar exam and works in private law practice. How wonderful to talk with a man that perfected his craft, using all of his gifts. He has a great propensity to serve, listen, research and ferret out important details -- he is a brilliant attorney.
  • Pat Riddle -- Pat decided to change her path at 49 to follow her dream of journalism. She went back to school for about 5-1/2 years, during which she interned with the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. At 55, Pat was hired to write column and happily fulfilled that passion into her 80's.
  • Walt Disney -- wanted good, clean family entertainment. He won 22 Academy Awards during his lifetime, and was the founder of theme parks Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
  • Mary Kay Ash -- created Mary Kay Cosmetics to allow women to advance by helping others succeed. She advocated "praising people to success" and expressed insistence that the women in her company keep their lives in good balance.
  • Yogi Berra -- Only one of his brothers that received father's blessing to play professional baseball. Yogi was a 15-time All Star, winning the MVP three times. He holds numerous World Series records and hit the first pinch hit home run in World Series history in 1947. Yogi was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. When he came to a "fork in the road," he took it.

A man or a woman with a passion is worth 100 people with a passing interest. If you find work that you really love, you will be successful. What a wonderful legacy to show that God takes care of you! When we choose a career using the things God gives us -- skills, gifts, passions, interests, values -- we will most likely end up doing what we love. We will perform better, earn a better living, and please our boss more. We will be more confident, more employable, and able to help others better. When you can find a job that you can say you want to do more than anything else in the world you will experience love. God is love.

I hope and pray you find what you love and achieve your dreams.
